We don't usually get snow in Pamlico County, but last week we lost three days to a storm that laid down a thick layer of ice followed by a layer of snow. We were scheduled to resume ReadingQuests this week, but we got another surprise snow that delayed school by three hours on Friday, shortening each period to about 50 minutes. Because of that, we haven't made a lot of progress, but from the activity in the library, I can tell that the freshmen have been READING!
While we were waiting to meet with the classes, Ms Remington worked on the class wikis she had created as the host for our project. She set each student up with a page of their own, and created a homepage and a resource page for each class. We uploaded the project syllabus and the Quest Scoring Guide. One-Pagers (from the book "Readicide"), which are a quick and easy 10-point project to let the students move forward on their own, were also added to the sites.
During the brief time we had with the students on Friday, they created wiki accounts, then we showed them how to access and edit their own wikipages. Most of them were able to update their gamer profiles, which will serve as their reading log and points ledger. They also entered their first gamer log, letting us know their weekly progress. They will be making entries in the gamer log at least once a week.
One of the students is looking for a way to embed a tracking bar in the wiki so students will be able to see their progress in a graphic instead of just as a number. Several students are also looking forward to opportunities to interview one another about the books they are reading. We've already had a few students earn achievements for recommending books, and Ms Remington will be uploading a book recommendation form so students can document earned XP for that. I'll be creating the leader boards with the students' avatar names. We will add icons later.
We are going to have our first Free Play ReadingQuest Day tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it!
